What is 316 Stainless Steel

What's 316? Stainless Steel?

Many alloys are added on steel to enhance its desired properties. For instance, the marine-grade stainlesssteel, commonly referred to as Type 316, is resistant to certain kinds of aggressive environments.

There are numerous types of stainless steel , 316. The most common are the L, F, N, and H variants. Each is slightly different, and each one is designed for reasons that are different. L means 316L steel contains the lowest carbon content, which is below the 316.

312, 316, and 316L Stainless Steel Common Quality

While they are similar to Type 304 commonly found in the food industry, the Type 316 and 316L both offer better resistance to corrosion and are stronger at higher temperatures. They are also not able to be hardened by heat treatment and can be easily bent and stretched.

A distinction between the 316 and 316L Stainless Steel

316L stainless steel has less carbon than 316. Even though it has a higher carbon-content, 316L is very similar to 316 in nearly every way. The cost is similar, and both are strong and resistant, making them the ideal choice for conditions that require a lot of stress.

For projects that require lots of welding can be a preferred choice because 316 more susceptible to welding corrosion that it is (corrosion inside the weld). However, 316L can be annealed in order to prevent welding attenuation. The 316L is an extremely ideal stainless steel to use in high temperature, high corrosion applications, which is why it is so well-liked in marine and construction.

The 316L and 304L are not the same. 316L is the most affordable option. The 304 is similar to 304L however, the price is much lower. Neither is as durable as the 317 and 317L which have a higher molybdenum concentration and better overall corrosion resistance.
