Seed vs. Sod
In every case except overseeding, the choice is between various types of turfgrass seed and various types of turfgrass sod. Seeding a new lawn or overseeding and patching with seed are common practices because using grass seed has certain advantages.
Choosing Sod
An excellent alternative to seeding your lawn is to lay sod for an instant turf. Even though a permanent turf has instantly replaced the bare soil, care must be taken to develop a strong root structure to ensure a long life for the new grass plants.
Preparing To Sod the Lawn
If the soil has sufficient organic matter and air in it, it will support a good population of earthworms and microbes. Tilling the turf into the soil: An alternative to stripping off the old turfgrass sod is tilling it into the soil with a large rented self-propelled or tractor drawn tiller that will loosen the soil to a depth of at least 6 inches..
About Renovation With Sod
Routine Maintenance - The easiest way to insure a beautiful lawn for the long term is to overseed the existing turf every four or five years or when it is about 25% weeds.
Spiders Are Major Helpers
Even where spiders do not kill and or eat all the pest insects in a given area, there are certain pest species that flee an area where spiders are present.
