Wood Chips
Perhaps the most common mulch used by yardeners around landscape plants and beds is wood chips; usually purchased from the local garden center or home center. Wood chips are still organic matter and if you only use wood chips, the soil health will improve over the years, but probably at half the rate of chopped leaves or peat moss.
Compost
Compost is often touted in the gardening books as an excellent soil amendment with all kinds of wonderful benefits, and much of that publicity is true. We use compost when we are planting or transplanting plants; it helps the plant adjust to its new home with less stress.
Caring for Katsura Tree
Because Katsuratree is not very drought tolerant, it is very important to keep a 3 to 4 inch layer of mulch around its base all year round. Katsuratree is intolerant of drought and should be protected from direct exposure to wind.
Choosing A Shredder
If you are having difficulty in getting rid of all or some of the organic waste produced from the normal plant care routines, perhaps a shredder is a tool to consider.
Fixing Compaction and Structure
When we walk behind our lawn mower or sit on our riding mower 20 to 25 times a year, we are compacting the soil under the turfgrass. Soil that is tilled while working in organic matter such as peat moss and tilled soil that is covered with mulch will not become compacted so quickly if at all.
