Dealing With Snow and Ice
If possible, allow ice and snow on tree and shrub branches to melt on its own. Snow is an excellent thermal blanket for low-growing plants such as strawberries and perennial flowers.
Dealing With Salt Damage
Salt (sodium chloride) is used by many communities to prevent ice on the streets. The affected foliage may fall off in the spring, but usually the new spring growth may make the tree or shrub appear otherwise healthy.
Wintry Weather Can Lead to Ice Dams on Roofs and Leaks
An ice dam is a ridge of ice that forms at the edge of a roof and prevents melting snow (water) from draining off the roof. The water above backs up behind the ice dam and remains a liquid, which can find cracks and openings in the exterior roof covering and flow into the attic space.
