Children and Lead
As they run or dig in the ground, children can inhale small particles of dust. Hands, toys and candies dropped on the soil are also a source of lead. One that is high in fiber, calcium and iron and low in fat will contribute to good general health and may help specifically by preventing the absorption of low levels of lead by the body.
Mulching Under Trees
Groundcovers act as “living” mulch and do not compete with the trees as much as turf. Groundcovers hide decaying leaves that provide the same benefit to a tree as does a thick layer of organic mulch.
Caring For Lilac
A soaker hose system or dripping garden hose that waters the soil directly is best so that the mildew-prone lilac foliage remains dry. After several years the decomposing layers of organic mulch at the base of the plant will improve the soil and it should be rich enough to support lilacs with out supplemental feeding.
Texas Urban Landscape Guide
Most suppliers recommend from 1 to 3 inches of mulch on a highly sloped landscape a hard rain will wash such material off the slope where slopes occur proper barriers must be installed to hold the mulch, and heavier materials such as gravels or rocks are recommended.
GROWING ENDIVE
The curly-leafed type is more tolerant of high temperatures and should be planted for late spring or early fall harvest. Subsequent plantings may be made for fall harvest, but you should switch to escarole because it is able to withstand cold weather better than endive.
