Chapter 7
The material in this chapter is designed to help you start a local public-private approach to community wide home composting. Don't give the story to the society editor on Monday and then call the news editor the next day and give him the same item.

Classroom Vermicomposting
Squirmy Worm teaches young people about recycling, turning organic waste generated at home into rich compost using worms - a process called vermicomposting. Master Gardeners have developed a special curriculum for use in elementary schools, where kids not only raise worms to turn waste into "black gold", but also learn math, science, environmental and language skills along the way.

Solid Waste Management Program
Texas Cooperative Extension, Texas A&M University System, actively supports the future creation and/or the protection of a sound environment through enhancement of public awareness and educational activities concerning sustainable solid waste reuse, reduction, recycling, reprocessing and buying recycled.

Green Industry Water Conservation Project
The following Web links provide additional information concerning water and water conservation for the GREEN industry. An extensions leaflet from the University of Florida that describes the efficiencies of water use as well as factors that affect this efficiency.

PROGRAM SPEAKERS AVAILABLE
If you are the program chairperson of a garden club, community club, civic club or church group and you want someone to speak to your group about shrubs, perennials, annuals, trees, turf or any other gardening subject, call on the Master Gardeners.
