Problems With Peas
Brownish or yellow blotches form on leaves and pods; stems may turn purplish; leaves eventually yellow Try a fall crop or planting earlier next year will solve the problem. Peas planted for a fall harvest benefit from the protection of shade netting and a thick organic mulch for the first month or so.

Buffalo Gnats
There are reports of buffalo gnats, also known as black flies, attacking people and poultry, particularly in the Springfield area. Although there are reports of DEET-containing insect repellents of not being effective, scientific literature reports that DEET repellents provide the most effective protection.

Feeding Woodpeckers
Woodpecker habitats have lots of woody plants that harbor insects for food and provide nesting sites. Woodies also eat fruits and seeds from a variety of woody shrubs and trees.

Try Barriers
Another strategy for controlling squirrels is erecting an electric fence around vegetable beds or other planted areas attractive to squirrels. Electrify an existing chicken wire fence around your vegetables or plants by insulating the fence posts and then stringing a single strand of “hot” wire around the top edge of the fence.

Cicada Help
A group of periodical cicadas that live in a specific area, often covering parts of several states, emerge at the same time and are known as a brood. Over the past 17 years, these insects have been quietly feeding on the sap of tree roots.
