USNA Plant Introductions and Releases

S. National Arboretum through years of hybridization, selection, and careful evaluation.

Planting & Propagating Coleus
Soil - The soil for all Coleus should be of rich to average fertility, humus rich, moist and well drained. Starting From Seed - Place the seeds in a refrigerator for one or two days before planting them on the soil surface.

Planting Violets
Early blue violets and butterfly violets survive easily in woods and yards as far north as the Mid-West and Middle Atlantic regions and along the eastern seaboard into New England (zones 5, 4). There are a number of products at the garden center that will help your newly planted or transplanted plants deal better with the stress inherent in the planting process.

Planting Walnut
These trees are notoriously difficult to transplant because they have long taproots, so it is best to choose young trees that are either in containers or have their roots in a soil ball wrapped in burlap.

Planting Weigelia
Set the shrub in the hole, taking care that the top of its soil ball is level or slightly higher than the surrounding soil level.
