USNA Plant Introductions and Releases
Many of the ornamental and flowering trees and shrubs and herbaceous garden plants found in cities, towns, and home landscapes throughout the United States and many other countries were developed by scientists at the U. S. National Arboretum through years of hybridization, selection, and careful evaluation.

State Trees
Sugar maples are among the best known trees in the eastern United States because of their handsome appearance and distinctive leaf shape. It is sometimes desired as a Christmas tree, but the sharp needles and stiff branches make it harder to work with than many other conifers.

State Tree and Flower
Each of the 50 states and several United States territories have designated an official tree and flower. Many of the state flowers are actually trees as well -- some states have chosen the same species as state tree and as state flower.

Arborist Album: Bartlett Tree Experts at USNA
Without delay, staff broke into five work groups to work on trees in different locations throughout the Arboretum. Crews worked on cabling to protect an elm from storm damage, pruning dead wood from trees, root excavation of two trees to reveal root zone problems, planting maples in the Maple Collection, and fertilizing trees.

New Arboretum Posters Highlight Introductions
One poster features our superior tree introductions, while a second one focuses on our most outstanding shrub cultivars. The 22" x 34" posters will be distributed to stakeholders primarily at trade shows and other industry functions.
