In addition to their aesthetic and environmental value, woody ornamentals often represent a considerable financial investment in the landscape. It can be told apart by the coarser leaves and by having only a single large sepal on the margin of the flower cluster (Climbing Hydrangea has 4 or 5).

If the mulch smells like freshly cut wood or fertile garden compost, chances are slim that it will be a problem. Have your mulch delivered well ahead of when you need it so that you don't have to rush to apply mulch that could benefit from a few days or weeks of curing.

Conifer Questions and Answers
For most conifers, slightly acid soil that is loamy and well-drained is ideal. In the cool days of autumn, they have more time to make root growth in moist soil.

Wetwood/slime flux
The bacteria Enterobacter cloacae along with several other bacteria commonly occur in elms in association with the water-soaked condition of wood called bacterial wetwood. When the liquid exudes out of wetwood and reaches the surface of the bark, it supports the growth of other bacteria as well as yeasts and filamentous fungi.
