circular rows of holes in bark of pine trees
Not sure about Canada, but in the US they are endangered and protected and are generally more nuisance than harmful to the trees. I encountered a yellow-bellied sapsuckers busy at work on a tree along the crowded sidewalk in the historic section of Williamsburg, VA.

Problems of Pine Trees
Perhaps the major concern when planting pines, in particular large plantings, is pine wilt disease, caused by the pinewood nematode. Unless these problems are identified and corrected promptly, white pines lose color in their needles and experience premature needle drop and stunted growth.
Austrian Pine
The Austrian Pine, also known as Black Pine, is rapidly becoming an important plant in our landscape due to its attractive pyramidal form and striking dark green foliage. As a functional tree, it makes an excellent wind break that can withstand wind and heavy snow.
IPM Series Pine HG54 pfv
Tip browning results from necrotic banding of the middle of needles. The nests are 3-6 inches long and may contain several larvae. The bark and wood become spongy and develop resin pockets that ooze sap when punctured.
Bark Beetles on Coniferspfv
Healthy conifers can usually withstand bark beetle attacks by literally trapping the beetles in a sticky flow of pitch. Beetles often carry pathogenic fungi such as blue stain that are deposited in the vascular system of the tree.
