Organic fertilizers
I really want to stray away from the non-organic fertilizers but am having a hard time understanding which are the best. I have heard that using a compost product is a great way to add nutrients while adding the the ability to retain water.

Sometime in the late 90's, I asked 450 members of the Garden Writers Association if they knew what a 'mycorrhizal' was or had ever heard of plant exudates. All were amazed to learn that 96% of plants have a symbiotic relationship with fungi (mycorrhizal) called a mycorrhizae.
How to Fertilize
Always use granular fertilizer with a significant proportion of its nitrogen in slow-acting form (WIN, or water insoluble) to deliver basic nutrition to turfgrass. Because their nitrogen dissolves in water, it is absorbed so rapidly by grass plants that repeat fertilization is necessary many times over the season.
Fertilizer For Lawns
The issue with lawn fertilizer is whether you use a slow release nitrogen product or a quick release nitrogen product. In the nutrient analysis on the back of the package where the percentages of the NPK nutrients are shown, nitrogen is often listed twice.
