Treated Lumber
The main question is whether the chemicals used to treat the wood can end up in the food the gardener is growing. CCA, which contains chromium, copper and arsenic, is the most widely used wood preservative because copper is a very effective fungicide and arsenic is a very effective insecticide.
Lehigh Bin
This is a very simple bin which can be made of scrap lumber or with lumber purchased new. The fixture in the sketch is made of scrap pieces of lumber and nailed together in some fashion.
Portable Ratwire Bin
These sides are attached to each other to form a box by means of hinges and one has latches mounted on it so that it can be opened for access to the material stored within.
Wood Chips
Perhaps the most common mulch used by yardeners around landscape plants and beds is wood chips; usually purchased from the local garden center or home center. Wood chips are still organic matter and if you only use wood chips, the soil health will improve over the years, but probably at half the rate of chopped leaves or peat moss.
Using Blackgum
The Blackgum should be considered an excellent native tree to plant in the home landscape for both fall color and year round ornamental effect. Where the tree is common in the south, Blackgum or Tupelo honey is often sold by name.
