One of the emblems of the eastern deciduous forest is the native flowering dogwood, Cornus florida. Today, the long grassy fairway that leads to the fountain at the far end is lined with scores of mature dogwoods that bloom throughout the spring and summer months.

Dogwood anthracnose
Leaf spots are round to blotchy and have tan centers with reddish purple margins. Vascular cambium infected with dogwood anthracnose is chocolate brown in contrast to the pale tan color of healthy sapwood.

When used as specimen trees in turfed areas, plant in beds extending to the edge of the mature leaf canopy and mulch with three inches of mulching material. These hybrids show greater resistance to dogwood anthracnose under normal landscape conditions and are resistant to borer.

I have heard that dogwood anthracnose is devastating dogwoods and that none of them are resistant to this disease. If you plant your dogwood in a location that gets morning sun and good air circulation, it is much less likely to succumb to this disease.
