Herbs in Everyday Cooking
A. Figuring out how to use fresh herbs is as easy as a trip to your pantry or spice rack. Plants in my garden which I consider indispensable in cooking include the following: Basil - Over 200 varieties with sweet basil being the most common; wonderful with fresh tomatoes and a sprinkling of freshly grated Parmesan cheese; a must for tomato sauce; the main ingredient for the wonderfully green and garlicky sauce - pesto (heaven on earth!).
Herb Garden
Members of the society also lobbied successfully for matching funds from Congress, and the National Herb Garden was constructed and dedicated in 1980 as a result. More than 50 varieties of peppers, some as hot as habaneros and others as mild as a sweet pepper grow in a single bed with fruits that provide a kaleidoscope of color in autumn.

Herbs and Spices
Herbs and spices (Crop Group 19) consist of herbs, such as basil and mint, and spices such as coriander. Herbs are grown for fresh cut leaves or soft plant parts, usually harvested fresh but may be used fresh or may be dried and used later.
FALL IS FOR HERBS
Mild or savory herbs impart a delicate flavor to food while the stronger or pungent herbs add zest to foods. Care for the herb garden will be similar to your vegetable or flower garden.
