Heirloom plants are varieties that have been handed down over many years and sometimes centuries, through farmers and gardeners. Hybrids have been touted to be more disease resistant but there are many old varieties that out-perform.

Some are natives, while others have been introduced and have proven their worth and adaptability over several or more generations. Most can be easily rooted from cuttings or grown from seed, since these methods of propagation were essential to handing these plants down among friends and family.

Choosing Garden Seeds

Educational Programs
9:00 - 11:00 a.m. Learn about growing tomatoes from seed from Master Gardener Sam Scarcella. Discussion topics include how to pick the best varieties including heirlooms, where to obtain seeds, planting and growing techniques, and insect and disease control.

SAVE YOUR SEEDS
Vegetable or flower seed will be purchased in great amounts and, in many cases, some seeds will be left over. As they continue to dry and the seeds begin to fall, they can be stored in film canisters or other small containers.
