Introduction To Groundcovers
When planted together in large numbers to form a mass that covers the soil, many, many plants can serve as groundcovers. Generally cheaper than turfgrasses to plant and maintain, a wide variety of plants do a better job of keeping soil healthy under trees and shrubs.

Planting Groundcovers
The best time to buy and plant annual plants to create a patch of groundcover is in the spring when they are available as inexpensive, young seedlings. Petunias, impatiens, nasturtium, alyssum and others spread quickly when the weather warms to form a colorful mat that will last until frost.

Groundcovers and Ferns
While having lots of colorful flowers in the landscape is a desireable goal, there are many plants that are extremely valuable additions to any landscape design and they have either no flowers or their flowers are insignificant.

Caring For Groundcovers
When groundcovers are first planted they need regular watering--an inch of water a week from rain or from a watering can, soaker hose, or drip irrigation --until they become established.
