Fertilizers
The bags are stacked in piles and every pile is a fertilizer with a different set of NPK numbers, such as 15-10-5. On the shelves are all the liquid fertilizers that we hear about ad nosium during the commercials while watching the ball game.
How to Fertilize
Always use granular fertilizer with a significant proportion of its nitrogen in slow-acting form (WIN, or water insoluble) to deliver basic nutrition to turfgrass. Because their nitrogen dissolves in water, it is absorbed so rapidly by grass plants that repeat fertilization is necessary many times over the season.

Lawn Fertilizers
The nutrients of most lawn fertilizers on the market today are synthesized rather than derived from natural plant or animal matter. The granular natural lawn products are by their nature slow-acting, because they depend on microbial action in the soil to release their nutrients for the plant roots.
Fertilizing In Poor Soils
The “life” in soil--the various macro and micro organisms that enrich soil by creating and processing nutrients in it--require organic matter to survive, so they are not present or active in poor soil.
