Deer Resistant Plants for Your Pennsylvania Garden
Deer may be beautiful to behold, but they can be a gardener’s nightmare. Many have experienced the frustration that results from deer grazing through your lawn, munching on the fruits of your labor, ruining your garden and costing you money. Many trees, shrubs and perennials that are considered deer resistant are available.

Planting Delphinium
Plant delphinium seedlings from the nursery or garden center in late spring, May or June. If possible, loosen the soil 1-foot deep when preparing the bed for planting. There are a number of products at the garden center that will help your newly planted or transplanted plants deal better with the stress inherent in the planting process.

Planting Blackgum
The nursery industry offers the species form of this plant in containers, as this plant is difficult to otherwise transplant. Named cultivars are available that have been selected for fall color and plant form, but none are readily available from retail nurseries.

Planting Butterfly Bush
While shrubs usually come through the mail in “bare root” condition, those purchased at the local garden center or nursery are typically in a container. There are a number of products at the garden center that will help your newly planted or transplanted plants deal better with the stress inherent in the planting process.

Planting Hosta
Under really shady conditions hostas may produce no flowers and fewer leaves, but the leaves will be larger. Plant potted hostas from the nursery or garden center any time after the soil has warmed and dried out a bit from spring rains.
