As a gardening television host and writer, I have the good fortune of seeing a lot of incredible gardens around the country. Usually this is for the intent of showcasing a unique or beautiful feature such as a piece of sculpture or a specimen tree with amazing branch structure or color.

Black Cherry
When planted in the right place it can be a satisfactory landscape tree that provides some fruit for folks interested in making pies and jellies. On the other hand, because birds and small mammals just adore those cherries, their spreading of the pits which germinate quite easily makes the tree a wood weed in many areas.

Ground or Tiger Beetles
Any reference to tiger beetles is dealing with one section of the ground beetle family, so we’ve combined them here since they are so similar. Unlike most insects ground beetles live a relatively long time; sometimes as long as four years and are fiercely voracious.

Ohio Buckeye
It is one of the first trees to shed its leaves in autumn, but it puts on a vivid display of bright orange and yellow before the leaves drop. The fresh seeds of this tree and the Red Buckeye are reported to be poisonous to man but not to squirrels.

Preventing Gypsy Moth Next Year
This natural process provides longterm help to trees and shrubs stressed by defoliation by gypsy moths. Spread a thick layer of organic material of some kind on the ground around each tree or shrub all the way out to the dripline (the furthest extent to which the branches extend).
