Design Ideas for Petunias
Because they tend to attract lovely moths after dark, many homeowners plant them near landscape lighting located near a window or patio where the flowers and their visitors can be enjoyed at night.
Using Periwinkle
As long as it is not planted in full sun, periwinkle is an ideal groundcover for both large or small areas and under densely-rooted trees where little else will grow.
Using English Ivy
The variegated and light-colored leaves of some varieties are ideal for brightening up dark areas under trees and shrubs. In fact, it is one of the few plants that grows well under trees like maples and beeches.
Using Red Salvia
Red salvia is a standout in a mixed flower border, its bright red spikes creating vertical punctuation amid other rounded or low growing blooms. Dwarf types of red salvia are suitable for window boxes, but their intense reds need moderating by white or light flowers such as petunias.
Using Arborvitae
Not only are arborvitaes useful for foundation plantings near buildings, but they are lovely when clustered in groves. If using soilless mix, add granular slow-acting fertilizer to it annually or remember to add dilute liquid fertilizer to the water periodically when you water them.
