ESPALIER FOR AN URBAN ORCHARD
Espalier is nothing more than pruning plants to a flat plane. So all you need is a sunny space at least three feet wide and eight feet long. Since it is difficult to find the fruit in stores and since figs grow well here, they are worth the effort.
Using Firethorn In The Yard
Their thorniness makes firethorns useful as barrier plants along property boundaries, around porches and under windows to bar uninvited intruders. Also, espaliered plants have potentially more insect and disease problems than plants that stand-alone and have better air circulation.
Using Goldenchain Tree
The Goldenchain tree makes a lovely specimen in small yards, especially if you have a spot that can use some bright color in late spring and early summer. To add to its flexibility this tree can be trained to grow over an arbor, pergola or other structure.

Using Ginkgo In Landscape
Ginkgo are not very useful as shade trees, especially in their youth, as the limbs and foliage are spaced apart too much to create much shade. As noted earlier, male trees serve best in the landscape or along streets because they do not produce the malodorous fruit that females bear.
