Using Mountain Laurel
Dense, compact mountain laurel shrubs have many uses. Single specimens are attractive in smaller yards, planted as foundation shrubs near the house or out in the lawn. Slit the bottom 2 inches of each woody stem with a knife, then plunge the boughs into very warm water for several hours, even overnight.
Using Peonies
Plunge the stems into warm water for an hour or two before arranging them for display. Add a teaspoon of sugar to the water in the vase to prolong the bloom.
Using Loosestrife
Still something of a wildflower even in its tamed versions, purple loosestrife clumps lend an informal tone to the yard. Later arrange them and other blooms in a container filled with tepid water and an equal amount of citrus based (not diet) carbonated drink to prolong flower freshness.
Linden Viburnum
They have ornamental features during every season of the year, producing clusters of white flowers in late spring and displaying massive quantities of bright red berries from late summer through winter.
