Caring For Cedar
Spread a layer of organic mulch 2 or 3 inches thick on the soil under the tree. Cedars do not like to stand in puddles, so be sure the soil drains well.

Caring For Juniper
Spread a layer of some organic material such as chopped leaves, wood chips or dried grass clippings on the soil under Junipers. Juniper trees need supplemental watering most when they're first planted and late fall before the ground freezes.

I use cedar mulch and have tried slug bait but they persist. Slugs and snails are nocturnal foragers and are the most common pest of hostas. During periods of heavy rain,I have had success by simply removing all mulch until the bed dries out before adding mulch back to the bed.

I went out today, after 2 days of warm and dry weather (in a row!) and discovered that small reddish ants are apparently nesting under a baby evergreen bush (about 6 inches high - a dwarf variety) which has been planted since April.

These black specks are likely mature spore masses expelled from fruiting bodies of a fungus identified as Sphaerobolus stellatus, commonly known as "shot gun" or "artillery" fungus. Penn State is currently conducting research on this problem, conducting trials involving mulch derived from pure hardwood bark as well as mulch with varying levels of wood content relative to bark content.
