Caring For Cedar
Spread a layer of organic mulch 2 or 3 inches thick on the soil under the tree. Cedars do not like to stand in puddles, so be sure the soil drains well.
Caring For Juniper
Spread a layer of some organic material such as chopped leaves, wood chips or dried grass clippings on the soil under Junipers. Juniper trees need supplemental watering most when they're first planted and late fall before the ground freezes.
Arborvitae Problems
Unfortunately American and Oriental Arborvitae are considered ice cream by deer and are quite vulnerable to deer browsing especially in the winter months. Do not be concerned if you notice some brown, dead leaves on arborvitaes at the same time the deciduous trees and shrubs are displaying their fall colors.
Problems of False Cypress
Check soil moisture under the mulch every two or three weeks if rainfall is sparse. Once False Cypresses and others are over 5 years old, they sustain little damage from this disease.
Problems of Creeping Juniper
Small spindle-shaped bags hanging like Christmas ornaments from juniper branches are bagworm cases. A fully developed bag is about two inches long and protects up to 1000 eggs over the winter, which hatch out the following spring.
