U.S. National Arboretum: Gardens: FAQs: Mexican flowering dogwood
A lesser known but important purpose of the National Arboretum is to collect and preserve ornamental plant germplasm. Sometimes, the National Arboretum is one of just a few botanical collections in the world that is growing a particular woody or herbaceous plant species.

Searching the Globe
Few gardeners can say they are at a loss for new plant material. With a click of the mouse on the Internet or a casual flip through a catalog, a gardener can be anywhere in the botanical world and back again within seconds: camellias from Japan; boxwood from the Republic of Georgia; geraniums from South Africa; or magnolias from South Carolina.

Botanical Gardens
Often the climate in certain areas affects the amount of time that children can spend in a garden, and the kinds of plants that they will be able to grow in the garden. Since botanical gardens often have greenhouses and grow many tropical plants, this could be a great way to expose children to plants they have not seen before.
